The Chilean artist Benjamín Lira held his first Chinese solo exhibition in Shanghai. Our grade two students had the honor to have a close encounter with this 70-year-old artist.
On the afternoon of June 21, Benjamín Lira described his artistic career to the students in an easy-to-understand language in the lecture hall of SUIS Wanyuan. He explained how a fairy tale book read by his grandmother was his artistic enlightenment and how he was influenced by the portrait paintings of the 18th century. From examples like this, the students could feel the rich life experience constantly informing the artists feelings. In addition to this, the various visual experiences brought by different geographical and cultural characteristics also inspired his creation.
The artist guided us through many pictures allowing the students to enjoy his Chilean studio and showcase many fine art collections. Images of his daily creative hobbies, and the colorful sketchbook he keeps made the children marvel. Benjamín Lira’s creative style is basically divided into: painting, collage and sculpture. Color is the most important language in his paintings. In these energetic paintings, children can find the buildings, streets and spaces scattered in the eyes of artists. They do not necessarily just depict landscape images, but also portray specific characters.
His method of sculptural creation coincides with the last art unit of this semester, which was using clay to create 3D works. The children saw the work scene of the artist’s outdoor sculptures, and how the huge avatar sculptures were created from shaping in the beginning to being placed in a kiln at the end. Students that learned the methods of making clay in the classroom were able to compare and feel how the same material can have unlimited creative possibilities in art.
The amiable Benjamín Lira also took a look at the art works of our primary students and gave them a high evaluation. He hopes that one day his work will become a teaching resource for one of our art units.
This wonderful exchange activity allowed the children to feel the working life of a contemporary artist at a close distance. At the same time, it also helped the children to see that the achievements of an artist are hard-won, and everything needed to be carefully accumulated.
