Learning is far beyond classroom teaching and is intrinsic to our lives. The series of “Versatile XieHe” reports aim to help discover a diverse life in school education from different perspectives. “Whilst Mr. East and Ms. West move one step towards to each other, the gap between the two will be getting ever smaller, and I believe they would finally meet up.” Sticking to the value that “unity in diversity, innovation through collaboration”, XieHe is always dedicated to cultivate world citizenship with a great open vision, where east meets west. In Wanyuan, lives are enriched with colorful and versatile elements, which are huge enrichment to the academic achievements. In XieHe, we do have gifted pupils with their fantastic performance.

别的同学美滋滋的拿着协和美高录取通知书时，我只进了9年级预备班。年少内向的我，内心波澜起伏，无可言说。路漫漫其修远兮，在老师的启发下，我利用在预备班的日子适应全新的学习环境，张开嘴巴，大胆与外教的交流，尝试走出自己的舒适圈，摒足了勁地学。天道酬勤，没错的，第一学期的学期末，我便手握全年级仅有的两个跳级名额中的一个，开始了期待已久的美高崭新生活。我明白了培根的一句话:深窥自己的心，而后发觉一切的奇迹在你自己。协和万源美式高中让我认识了不一样的自己。

When I was in middle school four years ago, I never thought about studying aboard in the future. My experience in SUIS Wanyuan US High School has changed me from an introvert to a reserved confident individual.

Actually, moving up from G8 from middle school, I was not directly admitted to Wanyuan USHS main stream (G9-G12) at the beginning, instead I was put in Pre-G9 reception program whereas many of my peers become 9th graders already. Frankly speaking I felt disappointed at myself, but at the same time I found myself being empowered to quickly adapt to a new learning environment, to better communicate with teachers, to study harder, and to walk out my comfort zone to challenge & explore. By the end of my first semester in reception program, I gained one of the two tickets to jump to Grade9 semester 2.

同许多人想法一样，我最初认为美国的教育系统和国内的教育体系相比，它应该更简单更轻松。然而四年的学习生活告诉我，此言谬矣！没有加倍的勤奋，就既没有才能，也没有天才。清晰记得我和同学们为了世界历史考试，一起复习到凌晨，看到上海早晨4点钟的黎明，耳边依稀还有和同学们一起在图书光赶作文时，手指敲击键盘的哒哒声……更多时间，我们倾向交流，互相交换思想升华观点，我们倾向如何用海报或视频，表达自己独特的观点和我们对世界的认识，我们更倾向于把学习到的理论付诸于实践，让每一个想法用最美的形式呈现……美高给予我发现世界的新“姿势”。

Like all the others, I used to think the life in international curriculum is relaxing and easy. In reality it is quite opposite, I still remember I burned might night oil studying World War II with my friends, and how exam essays drove us crazy, no matter how well we prepared, still felt no time to finish up all. But that’s the way I prefer, and that’s what Wanyuan US High School life is like. I prefer to communicate rather than to be a silent listener in classrooms; I prefer to use posters and videos to express my ideas rather than to immerse myself doing endless exercises; I prefer to put what I learnt into practice rather than to memorize textbooks..

我的课外活动Extracurricular activities

喜欢美高还因为学校里丰富的社团活动，我爱运动，爱新奇。飞盘对我来说是一个非常新奇的运动，参与这项运动，对我来说甚至是享受。几年时间，我们足迹遍布上海，冬天去过北京，在盛夏前往马来西亚，我们获胜，一起欢呼喝彩；我们输了，我们一起相互鼓励；我们流着汗奔跑，我们收获团队精神，我们收获友谊，一幕幕还在眼前，就在昨天。
Besides all student council and school works, I spent tons of time in Ultimate Frisbee and Dancing Team. Frisbee’s uniqueness (flying disk and no referees) attracted me to be part of the team at the first place. As more I participate, the more I feel obsessed with it. I enjoy the intensity when we compete with the other school varsity teams or teams from different countries. We cheer together when we win, encourage each other when we lose. For the past few years, our wolf team competed with almost all Frisbee teams in Shanghai, travelled to Beijing and Malaysia for tournaments. So many memories left in the field. Let’s go, crazy ultimate players. Let’s go, Wolves.

我们的舞社包含了来自六个不同国际高中的成员。六个人聚在一起，只是因为我们同样的爱好。我们一起分解每一个动作，一起和着音乐起舞，一起参加数不清的比赛，演出，一起享受街舞的快乐。也许有的人会说我在游手好闲，但是我想说，做你想做的，这才是衡量你价值的地方。

Our dancing club members are from six different international high schools. I feel lucky to have people around with the same interest and passion. I cannot count how many hours we spend together rehearsal for performances and competitions, but I know I like it when my body makes every move. Perhaps, someone would say that I am not doing any decent and academic activities. However, I am here to tell you that do what you want and that’s the most important thing which values who you are.

尽自己最大的努力，不辜负自己。作为一个“严重的拖延症患者”，我很晚才开始准备自己的申请材料和冲刺标化考试，这也给我带来了很大压力。如果你在准备写你的主文书，我的建议你尽早准备，这很重要。其次是写你最真实的经历，而不是编造一个故事。你可以把它当成对自己生活的反思和回忆，这才是最能触动招生官的做法。伯克利的录取通知可以说是一个大礼包。我知道那里的工作量和竞争性都很大，但是我相信那里会让我都尽到自己的全力。

As a “severe procrastinator”, I started my application quite late, which inevitably exerted lots of pressure on me. It would be really helpful if you could start your college planning early. Additionally, if you are writing your personal statement for common application, here is my genuine advice: It’s super important to write about your personal experience, but not the story you make up. You can take it as your reflection on life and the things mean a lot to you, and that will be something touching the others’ hearts. It’s quite a gift to me to receive the offer from UC Berkeley. I understand the workload and competitiveness there, but let’s all do our best work.
