What better way to take a step back in time than to visit the 140000 pieces of ancient Chinese artifacts held in the galleries of Shanghai Museum? Our third graders have been studying the influence of Chinese trade along the Silk Road on the world and today, they had a chance to first handedly view and appreciate the craftsmanship of the ancient people along those routes. These relics include bronze, ceramics and porcelain, currency, seals, sculpture, jade, and minority art.

In each gallery, the students had a written activity and timeline to help them track special features and technological advancements available during different dynasties. They were eager to collect information, which they can use later in re-creating some of their own artifacts.

They were impressed by the vast expanse of a rich, long Chinese history and could imagine the artifacts being created and used by ancestors.

The fourth grade students visited Shanghai Museum of Popular Geological Science. This field trip is related to what we have learned during the last six weeks. Students can see the different landforms in China in this museum.
Classes took turns rotating through three main activities.
第一项活动是参观东方地质博物馆岩石区域。学生们可以近距离得看到地质,地层的组成。这个环节设计到两个探究方法,如通过观看视频来学习、思考地壳运动对地理风貌的影响,感受地震的震级。
Activity one was a tour of the Rock Hall. Students saw a diversity of rocks which composed the Earth and the landform. There were two ways involved, liking watching a movie and feeling the shake of earthquake.
第二项在博物馆老师的带领下,学生参观,学习我国的几个重要的地貌和地质情况。结合我们探究课所学习的内容,来认识这些地貌特征。并且,参观了地貌之一的溶洞。
Activity two refers to Landform Hall. Guided by two museum docents, students learned the four main landform in China. With the knowledge learned in inquiry class, students could recognize the types of these Chinese landforms. Also students visited Cave Hall and knew how the inner part of it looked like.
最后,根据我们主题,学生对各种地貌进行讨论和总结。学生根据参观的中国四大主要地貌和曾经见过的国外相似地貌进行比较,来认识我国地貌的丰富性和多样性。同时,学生通过小组学习的方式来完成任务单并讨论反馈今天所学的知识。
Lastly, in line with our theme, students were expected to discuss and make a conclusion about the landforms and they were also able to compared the landforms with some other similar ones in other countries they ever saw. They discussed and thought about the worksheet questions and talked about how much they had known about landforms.
五年级学生来到了浦东的百欧欢有机农场。我们非常期待本次探究实践活动,它和我们正在学习的单元“环境保护”高度契合。BIO Farm是一个有机农场,它倡导大自然与人类之间的和谐关系。
The fifth grade students visited Pudong’s BIO Farm. This inquiry outing was greatly anticipated as it was the culmination of our unit “Conservation.” BIO Farm is an organic farm that, like our inquiry theme, encourages the healthy relationship between nature and people.
Classes took turns rotating through three main activities.
第一项活动是参观BIO Farm的农场设施。学生们看到满是食用花卉的温室,了解了如何安全自然地种植自己的食物。
Activity one was a tour of the BIOFarm’s facilities. Students saw greenhouses full of edible flowers and learned about how to safely and naturally grow their own food.
第二项活动是学生们能亲身体验农场的日常。导游告诉他们农场如何饲养牲畜,学生们尝试自己喂农场的兔子,猪和山羊。在这个过程中,孩子们弄脏了手,却得到了喂养的喜悦。
Activity two involved students taking a more hands-on approach to their learning. The children really got their hands dirty when our, knowledgeable guides, instructed them how the farm raises livestock. The students had the opportunity to feed rabbits, pigs, and goats natural produce grown on the farm.
最后,根据“我们的世界如何继续发展和变化” 以及“我们如何保护环境”的主题,学生们可以从菜园采摘树上的桔子和辣椒。
Lastly, in line with our theme of how our world continues to grow and change and how we must protect our environment, students were able to pick some oranges from the trees and peppers from the vegetable garden.
活动结束回到校园后,学生们观看了一部名为The Lorax的小电影。我们开始思考我们今天这探究活动背后的意义,或许有一天,我们可以改变世界。
When Grade 5 returned to SUIS, students viewed a film called The Lorax and afterwards, reflected on the events of the day and the true purpose behind our trip and the power they really have to change the world.
