After a successful Soccer tournament in Guangzhou in April our Wanyuan family can be very proud of the way our boys and girls team performed. The Girls team was able to bring home the 3rd Place trophy, whilst the Boys team made the Coaches so proud by bringing home the Best Sporting Team trophy, showing that even without on field success our boys demonstrate respect, enthusiasm and teamwork.
Mr Beniusis who has coached the Boys team over the last two years couldn’t have been more proud of his team. ‘They fought with real spirit, and showed great determination and tenacity against some tough teams.’ This was demonstrated by the final game against SSIS which was 2-2 going into extra time before David Xiao was able to find his first goal of the tournament, finishing off tremendous hard work that he had shown throughout the tournament.
Captain Zoe Wu and Tom Ye were some of the stand out players during the first two days of the competition. Tom proving he can not only defend but also score by finding the net twice. Whilst the Wolves Captain Zoe struggling with injury was able to encourage his team and also show fantastic ball control to dribble around 4 players and score, to the delight of all the Wolves supporters cheering the boys on from the sidelines. Finally, Patrick Huang our goalkeeper was on hand the entire tournament to pull of save after save, which meant opposing teams picked him out and he was able to make the ACAMIS All Star Boys team. An award he will cherish.
Mr Pratt who has coached the Girls team this season was ecstatic with the girl’s performances over the entire tournament. ‘The way in which we developed as a team, working hard for each other whilst also having fun and providing support and encouragement, makes me proud to be a Wolves coach. Getting 3rd place is an amazing achievement and is testament to the effort every player put in on and off the field.’ The Girls team started the tournament with a hard fought but unlucky 2-0 loss to the eventual winners ICA. They went into the next day with renewed enthusiasm and determination, which proved very successful. The Girls were able to go on an amazing 3 match unbeaten run in one day!
Going into the final day, after losing a tough game to BSG in the morning, the girls went into the 3rd/4th playoff against SSIS. A very close game was decided by an amazing strike by our senior Shel Zhang, SUIS Wolves winning 1-0 to clinch 3rd place. A special mention goes to Julie Huang for her brilliant defensive performance against the SSIS Captain.
Further mentions go to Cici Qiu, with her hard work being demonstrated with a place in the ACAMIS All Star Girls Team and Cindy Che for her constant running and decision making. The girls Captain Elaine Wu also showed that practice makes perfect, by having a fantastic tournament, scoring 4 goals and also winning a place on the ACAMIS All Star Girls Team.
Mr Pratt and Mr Beniusis also mentioned ‘Elaine Wu and Zoe Wu have shown to be unbelievable Captains. They are supportive, hardworking, and passionate about soccer but truly care about their teammates. They have shown what true Wolf pride is.’ Finally Mr Pratt and Mr Beniusis would like to thank all parents that supported us and allowed the students to attend, Mr Basem and Ms Jessie for attending and supporting us during the tournament, and finally the players for their team spirit and pride in playing for SUIS Wolves! We look forward to continued success on and off the field.
