From November 8-17 Cindy Xi and myself led eight of our high school’s finest students to Yale University for the World Scholar’s Cup’s Tournament of Champions. This is the final and most challenging round of the World Scholar’s Cup season, and concludes a journey that began with the Shanghai Round in April and also took in the Athens Global Round in July. Therefore qualifying for the Tournament of Champions takes a lot of time and effort, and Yale University is a fitting venue for such a prestigious contest. Our students were excited not just by the chance to participate in the tournament, but by the opportunity to experience a little of what life is like at Yale. What’s more, we also took advantage of this opportunity to expose our students to many educational and cultural experiences in the surrounding area.
As the name suggests, the Tournament of Champions is no easy contest. The very best students from around the world take part; indeed, even qualifying for the tournament is a challenge and an honor. So it is no surprise that all the participants were nervous in advance. However our students pulled through, and did fantastically well: we took home fifteen gold medals in total, even more than we had at the previous, easier, round in Athens. Highlights included one of our students coming in 3rd place (out of 988 students!) in the science contest, and another coming in 22nd in the debate contest. All of our students received medals, with most receiving at least one gold medal.
While New Haven, the town where Yale is situated, is a peaceful and beautiful place, we knew our students deserved to see more. So rather than waste time sitting around in our hotel or walking aimlessly around the streets of New Haven, we took every opportunity to travel and see the New York and Boston areas. Many of our students hope to study in this part of America, and we wanted to give them a feel for what life is like here, as well as helping them narrow down their university choices. Most of all however, we wanted to reward them for their achievement in qualifying for this trip by giving them new and exciting experiences.
With that in mind, we enjoyed a fantastic mix of cultural experiences, trying to absorb as much as possible from this most historic part of America. We visited three separate art galleries: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale Art Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The students got to see works by the likes of Picasso, Monet and Rodin that we hope will not just excite them, but inspire them. In fact perhaps my happiest moment of the trip was when the students chose to spend more time exploring MoMA instead of going shopping on New York’s Fifth Avenue! Speaking of New York institutions, of course we had to take the time to see a Broadway show: Chicago is the longest running Broadway show for good reason, and all of our students loved its mix of kinetic energy, striking visuals, twisted humor, satirical storytelling and musical genius. We also embraced nature, visiting the historic Walden Pond, famous for its impact on the great American writer Henry David Thoreau. Every student at our school studies Thoreau’s works, and now these eight students can now truly understand the inspiration behind his masterpiece Walden.
Overall, the students had experiences that were new and exciting, focused their minds on things – art, culture, nature – that are truly valuable in life, and should help motivate them to make the most of the new lives that they will soon start living in America. But of course before our students can start those new lives, they need to decide where they want to study. With that in mind, we toured no fewer than ten different universities. At each one, our students were able to see not just the university itself, but it’s surrounding environment, and were given a taste of university life by talking to professors and students, including four of our own alumni.
In the New York area we visited Columbia University, marveling at its historic architecture; Columbia’s sister school Barnard College, where one of the scholars has applied; NYU, a top destination for many of our students; and Parsons, where the tour was led by our alumnus Khloris Liu. In the Boston area we were guided around Harvard by one of its doctoral graduates; we visited MIT, where many of our science and tech-minded students hope to go; we were shown around Berklee College by our alumnus Charlene Pan; and two of our alumni Kathy Chen and Sherry Zheng gave us a tour around Boston University. Finally, the students experienced a very different, and uniquely American, institution when we visited West Point Academy, and of course we spent many days in the beautiful environs of Yale University. All in all, the students were able to learn a huge amount about the culture and history of these universities, while also getting a taste for the social and academic experiences at each that only an in-person visit can provide.
In short, the trip was a great success on many levels. The students proved their academic talent, got a taste for what life will be like when they are in university, and broadened their cultural horizons. We’re certain that they will all remember this trip fondly for years to come, and that the things they experienced and achieved will help them grow and succeed as students and as people.
